Day 1: Cusco - Quiquijana - Pomacanchi Lagoon - Santa Lucia - Waqrapukara
This exciting one-day adventure begins with an early 4:00 am pick-up from your accommodation. After a two-hour drive to Quiquijana and a hearty breakfast, we’ll head towards the beautiful Pomacanchi Lagoon, surrounded by pastures and farmland. We’ll continue for 90 minutes along an unpaved road to Santa Lucía, where we’ll enjoy scenic views of the lagoon, then take a short 30-minute drive to the hike’s starting point.
The first 1.5-hour stretch offers breathtaking views of the Apurimac Canyon, one of Peru’s deepest, with dramatic cliffs and stunning landscapes. At the Waqrapukara viewpoint, you’ll get your first glimpse of the ancient fortress perched on the canyon’s edge. We’ll then descend a steep path to the site, with views of the Apurimac River below.
Explore the Waqrapukara Fortress for about 90 minutes, climbing through the ruins, admiring the horn-shaped rock formation, and learning about its pre-Inca and Inca history. After soaking in the site, we’ll hike back, returning to Cusco by private transport around 5:00 pm.
